Hadas Neuman from Israel introduces her grandmother Ruhama:

When my grandmother is asked how old she is, she answers she’s 49 years old but then explains, “In Hebrew you read from right to left, consider that and you’ll know my age.”

Born in 1922, my grandmother settled in Beer Sheva, in southern Israel, where she still lives today. To this day, whenever she goes out for a walk, people stop and greet her with an enthusiastic hello, sometimes exclaiming, “You were my teacher!”, my grandmother smiles back, feeling pride that she still remembers their family names.

When she was only 16, her father sensed the radical change happening in Germany with the rise to power of the Nazi party. He was able to arrange for her to go with delegates from the Jewish Agency to Israel, leaving behind her three sisters (only one survived), a brother and two parents whom she would never see again.

My grandmother’s complex portrait emerges slowly through memories from her childhood in Germany, through the hardships of World War II, and through her part in the rebuilding of the land of Israel on the kibbutz where she lived. In addition to raising a family, my grandmother was also an educator. All these endeavors in her life were accompanied by strength, toughness and humor.

Some numbers: Grandma now has 3 children, 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and is still counting. Her oldest great-grandchild is 22, sporting a height of 1.94 meters.

סבתא רוחמה

כששואלים את סבתא שלי בת כמה היא, היא עונה שהיא בת 49 ואז מסבירה: “בעברית קוראים את הכתוב משמאל לימין, אז עכשיו תבינו לבד בת כמה אני.”

ילידת 1923, מתגוררת בעיר באר שבע שבדרום ישראל. עד היום, כשהיא יוצאת לחרוך את רחובות העיר אנשים עוצרים אותה ברחוב ואומרים לה שלום נלהב – :”את היית המורה שלי! את היית המורה של אחי!” וסבתא מחייכת, מתגאה שהיא עדיין זוכרת את שמות המשפחה שלהם.

כשהייתה בת 16 בלבד, אביה הריח את השינוי הקיצוני שהתחרש באותה העת בגרמניה עם עלייתה לשלטון של המפלגה הנאצית והצליח לארגן לה נסיעה במשלחת של הסוכנות היהודית לארץ ישראל, כאשר היא משאירה מאחוריה שלוש אחיות (שרק אחת ניצלה), אח ושני הורים שאותם לא תראה עוד.

דיוקנה המורכב של סבתי מצטייר לאט מבעד לזיכרונות מבית ילדותה מגרמניה, דרך תלאות מלחמת העולם השנייה, בניית ארץ ישראל בקיבוץ והקמת משפחה כאשת חינוך, כל זאת לצד חוזק, קשיחות והומור בריא. על שלל גווניה זוהי סבתא שלי.

קצת מספרים: לסבתא יש היום 3 ילדים, 8 נכדים ו- 8 נינים והיד עוד נטויה. הנין הכי גדול שלה הוא בן 22 והוא מתנשא לגובה 1.94.
